	Sustainable Adaptive Gradients in the Coastal Environment (SAGE) The present and future environmental challenges, such as hurricanes and climate change, require prompt action to generate economically viable solutions but at the same time friendly with the environment. To achieve this it is necessary to create a network of specialists in various fields that can work with interdisciplinary solutions. That is the goal of the project recently funded to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst by the National Science Foundation (or NSF) entitled "Sustainable Adaptive Gradients in the Coastal Environment (SAGE)". To achieve this mission CoHemis is collaborating with its extensive experience forming international networks, which will allow a better connection with the Caribbean and Latin America. The CoHemis Director, Dr. Fernando Gilbes, has been invited to be part of the Steering Committee of the project along with other researchers from the United Kingdom, Norway, Barbados, and United States.
	Coastal Areas Climate Change Education Partnership (CACCE) The project titled Coastal Areas Climate Change Education Partnership (CACCE) is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. It aims to create awareness about the impact of climate change on coastal areas, like for example the change in the sea level. The main partners of the project are University of South Florida, University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, Hillsborough County Public Schools, The Florida Aquarium, and the University of the Virgin Islands.
	Conservation workshops The Office of Ecological services of the Caribbean Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and CoHemis are working together through a multi-year collaborative agreement to train the staff of government agencies on the processes of consultation and technical assistance to development projects in Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands.
	Energy efficiency and renewable energy Forum The center of business and economic development (CNDE) and CoHemis have joined forces to present forums that allow dialogue about energy efficiency, renewable energy, and economic development. These educational events meet experts on these issues from the University and industry. The interest is to discuss this relevant issue that highlights the importance of the use of renewable energy and at the same time the potential of promoting a new industry comprising local companies based on solutions to the energy crisis which the country is experiencing.
	Summer camp BETTeR-IC+ CoHemis and the Industrial Biotechnology program carried out annually the BETTeR-IC summer camp + (Biotechnology for Educational Training in Teams through Research and Interdisciplinary Centers). Students from various schools of Puerto Rico learn about science, technology, environment, and community service. It includes workshops, visits to laboratories at UPRM, working in a community garden, the exposure of the subjects of marine biotechnology and bio-optics in the laboratories of Magueyes Island (in La Parguera, Lajas), and in 2013 for the first time had a field trip to the Amgen Pharmaceutical, among other educational and recreational activities.
	Society Devoted to Advancing Hispanics, Chicanos & Native Americans in Science The chapter of SACNAS at UPRM is linked to CoHemis since its founding in 2007. This chapter is dedicated to the professional and personal development of students. Annually they organize activities that help them generate leadership and allow them to gain important knowledge to enhance their capabilities as scientists or engineers. CoHemis provides them the necessary administrative support and technical advice. At the same time this collaboration meets one of our goals: increase the number and quality of engineers and Hispanic scientists in the global market.
	Remote Rensing and Geographic Information Systems (PRYSIG) The advancement of technology has produced new and better study tools that facilitate the understanding of natural processes and human. Examples of these tools are the remote sensing and geographic information systems. Therefore, CoHemis is disseminating and promoting these tools already available for several years on our island. That way the Puerto Rican community can understand them and use them more frequently.
	Science and Technology CoHemis Conference (SciTeCC) This initiative arises from the CoHemis commitment of developing educational and research initiatives that generate networks of collaboration, sharing and get knowledge and technology - especially state of the art - to make a difference in our respective areas of work. SciTeCC focuses on search cutting-edge topics in science and technology to be presented to the University community with the best available resources.
	Olé-RUM The project of studies in Spain, known in our campus as Olé-RUM, is intended to offer students the opportunity to develop academic, social and culturally in a university environment. Students who participate spend one or two semesters at a Spanish University that participates in this project. For several years, CoHemis was in charge of Ole-RUM, but currently it is under the Office of Student Exchange in the 5th floor (Office #510) of the Student Center.
	Functional genomics of soil microbiota Taking into account the microbial diversity of the forests in Puerto Rico and their biotechnological potential this project proposed to study functional genomics of soil microbiota. Beyond the traditional approaches of metagenomics, it was intended to link the role of microbes with the geology in both ecosystems. Our ultimate goal of this research was to discover new genes and enzymes with special interests in those related to the process of mineralization. The main educational objective was to educate a new generation of professionals in the field of metagenomics.
	Alliance citizen for education in renewable energy (ACEER) This is a non-profit organization focused in the citizenship education of the energy affairs in Puerto Rico and the World responding to the needs of the residential, commercial, industrial, and governmental customers with renewable and sustainable solutions. ACEER thrives on volunteers and entities such as CoHemis, whose work comes from various sectors of community, environmental, civic, commercial, industrial, professional and academic. Since its foundation in 2007, our work has focused on programming a cycle of conferences aimed at a diverse audience from all over the island including technology fairs, and demonstration projects of high visibility in the area of renewable energy.
	Association of Universities and Research Institutions of the Caribbean (UNICA) This Association held its forty years of founded in 2007. That date was so significant because of a very special annual Conference which took place from 14 to 16 November 2007, on the Mayagüez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico. One of the main objectives of UNICA is to promote contact and collaboration between universities and research institutes and centers. Part of its duties is to facilitate academic contacts and collaborative projects by getting together institutions and academics from the entire region.
	The Learning Factory The Manufacturing Engineering Education Partnership (MEEP, a collaboration between UPR Mayagüez, Penn State University, University of Washington, Sandia International Laboratories, and the industry) has developed a choice of engineering preparation and manufacture of products, at the undergraduate level, which deals with various topics about the new criteria of ABET 2000, specifically criterion 2 and 3. As a result of this program the learning factory was created, a curriculum at the undergraduate level, integrating laboratory facilities and the collaboration with the industry. CoHemis has coordinated workshops of this project, which has been offered in many countries of Latin America.
